He has held key editorial and leadership positions at some of Kerala's prominent media organisations, including Asianet News Online, Asiaville Malayalam, Mathrubhumi News, and Reporter TV. He is also a co-founder of Dool News.

A pioneer in digital storytelling, Varun introduced several innovative media formats, including India's first mobile vertical video programme, Nere Va Nere Po (2015), Malayalam's first daily web-exclusive show, Anganeyaanu Inganeyaayathu (2016), and a 360-degree interactive Onappathippu (2019). He also authored Mayyazhi (2016), published by DC Books, described as Malayalam's first interactive multimedia book.

He is the founder of School of Storytelling (SOS), a creative education and technology platform exploring the intersection of cinema, human creativity, and artificial intelligence. Through SOS, he is developing a new approach to filmmaking education that integrates cinematic craftsmanship, storytelling, and emerging AI technologies.

He also works with media organisations on AI and immersive storytelling and serves as a mentor for Kerala Startup Mission, supporting innovation in media technology. His work is driven by a central belief: the future of storytelling lies not in technology alone, but in the human imagination that directs it.
