Dr E V Soniya

Dr E. V. Soniya is an acclaimed molecular forensics expert and biotechnology leader with over three decades of experience in genetics and DNA analysis. She served as Scientist G and Academic Dean at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram, where she headed the Regional Facility for DNA Fingerprinting for nearly a decade. Under her leadership, RGCB’s forensic laboratory achieved significant accreditation milestones, including NABL, NABH and ILAC recognition.

A trusted expert witness in high-profile judicial cases, Dr Soniya has played a pivotal role in DNA-based victim identification during major disasters, including the Puttingal fireworks tragedy and Cyclone Ockhi. Her expertise spans human DNA profiling, wildlife forensics and molecular genetics. She has also contributed to postgraduate and doctoral research programmes, mentoring young researchers and advancing scientific education.

Her contributions have been recognised through honours including the National Women Bioscientist Award in 2019. She is an elected fellow of National Academy of Sciences India, National Academy of Biological Sciences, and Kerala Academy of Sciences. She is also an INSA women Associate, top-tier female professionals across academia, industry and NGOs to drive collaboration and mentor the next generation.
